Summer wouldn't be right if we didn't hit up some awesome fireworks! Monticello Days had an AMAZING show at Lodge Park, which they do every year apparently. There was a huge turnout, the campground was packed with people. Joel and I think it would be a lot of fun to campout there next year and just be right in the middle of the fun. The park is beautiful and very nicely shaded with these huge trees, I think the kids would really like to do something like that next year.
Pre firework show, we ran into our next door neighbor who has lived in Monticello since she was young. Joel and I started talking about how we shouldn't have had dinner before we came because the corn dogs looked delicious. In response she told us we should NEVER call them corn dogs, that they were Pronto Pups, and they were the best thing since sliced bread. They travel to state fairs all over the midwest, they are award winning, this and that, on and on.... We walked away thinking "we just got schooled". We won't make that mistake again, and we'll have to save room for one next year.
Joel and the kids spent an eternity filtering sand through water to find precious stones at a local booth at the festival. For $3, you got a bucket of sand and you could spend as long as you wanted filtering through it to find the cool rocks. I swear they could do that all day long and not get bored. Charlee thought it was the coolest thing ever, she felt so cool when she left with her rocks and Geode that she found.
After about thirty minutes of fireworks, the kids were so tired, they had no attention for them anymore and they just wanted to sleep, so we spent the remaining show hiking back to our car. It seemed like the firework show that never ended. It had to have been at least 75 minutes long. All in all, a great night! It's funny how we take the kids to things like this, thinking that they will just LOVE the main attraction, when in reality they are fine doing the dumbest things like filtering rocks through water for 45 minutes.
